Unions formally object to new minimum wage

Turk-Sen, the umbrella union, having already protested against the TL115 increase in the minimum wage, formally appealed against the increase, yesterday.

In its statement, the union says that the minimum wage had not been increased for two years. During that time, the cost of living had increased by some 40%. The government refuses to see this and with the derisory increase, is pushing workers into poverty.

The gross minimum wage of TL 1415 per month is not enough to sustain a family of four and may even push them into suffering food shortages, it said. Therefore the union formally appeals against the minimum wage increase.
