The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has offered tenders for road improvements at both Derinya and Aplic border crossing. The existing roads will be resurfaced, shoulders added and drainage installed. Pipework for future utilities are to be laid.
The tenders are offered within the framework of “Removing Barriers to Peace: New Transit Points in Cyprus Project”.
Meanwhile, Lefke and Regional Civil Society Organisations Platform Coordinator, Teoman Oktay, issued a statement inviting Turkish Cypriot contractors to participate in the tender. Oktay addressed the Turkish Cypriot Contractors’ Association and emphasised that the issue is not merely a profit-making event but it was also a matter of prestige for the Turkish Cypriot side.
Oktay reminded that the Turkish Cypriot side had tried hard to get the crossings opened. It was a significant event and Turkish Cypriot contractors should display more interest in the projects than they had done in the past.
“It is very important to open these doors. When the Lefke-Aplic border crossing opens, the entire region will benefit. Our contractors should view this in terms of the benefits they will bring in the long run”, he said.
