The UK remains willing to return part of its British bases territory to the Cypriots after the island is re-united, British High Commission to Cyprus Ric Todd has said.
In an interview with CyBC Television, he said that:
“The Foreign Office’s decision on the (British Bases) territory stands but the military presence of the UK will still be substantial due to the geographical position of Cyprus”.
“The sovereign military bases in Cyprus are very important strategically and are an advantage not only of Britain but of Europe in general,” he said.
He emphasised that a solution to the Cyprus problem would benefit both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and the wider region.
Negotiations have reached a critical point with the discussion of problematic issues such as property, territory and guarantees. The UN has also launched a programme to study the possibilities of funding a Cyprus settlement.
