The initial election for leadership of the ruling UBP party was held on October 21st last year with a turnout of 1427 delegates, of whom 1402 voted. Prime Minister Kucuk received 704 votes and Ahmet Kasif, with 690 votes, was his closest contender.
Now these two will be competing again, following a legal challenge from Ahmet Kasif. The Supreme Court in Nicosia upheld that Mr Kucuk’s victory was in fact illegal and against the voting rules of the UBP party.
As as a result, voting for this repeat election will begin at 10am today at the Ataturk Sports Hall in Nicosia.
