Turkish Navy Defends Seismic Survey Vessel ‘Barbaros’

North Cyprus News - Barbaros Hayreddin PashaThe Turkish navy has intercepted a Greek warship as it harassed a Turkish seismic vessel off Cyprus, local media reports say.

On Thursday, state-run Anadolu Agency reported that Turkey’s first seismic vessel ‘Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa’ was harassed by a Greek naval frigate during its ongoing surveys offshore Cyprus.

An undisclosed number of warships of Turkey’s Naval Forces interdicted the Greek warship, the report added.

We recommend that Greece abstains from acts that would cause an escalation in the Mediterranean region,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the incident.

Since April 2017, Turkey has increased its seismic research and drilling activities in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

We will drill our first well in the Mediterranean this year with the country’s first drilling vessel, Fatih,” Turkey’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez said on 26 July.
