Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has called on Turkish sports teams to support sports activities here in the TRNC.
In a written statement issued yesterday, the foreign minister said that holding friendly matches or games between TRNC and Turkish teams was extremely important for removing the embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people.
Drawing attention to the fact that it was the Turkish Cypriot youth who suffered the effects of the inhumane embargoes or isolation the most, Ertuğruloğlu said that some of these obstacles were overcome with the support of Turkey.
He said that they were expecting this crucial support to increase in the period ahead.
The foreign minister said that Turkish Cypriot athletes and players lost motivation when faced with the difficulties of trying to enter or participate in international sports competitions. That motivation was important because it created a sense of identity and belonging.
He said that the fact that Turkish teams did not even hold friendly matches or games with Turkish Cypriot teams or players deeply wounded Turkish Cypriot youth.
“We are expecting more support from sports teams from motherland Turkey during this new period in which the UN Good Offices Mission has announced that the Cyprus negotiations process is over”, Ertuğruloğlu said.
