Following on from the monthly food collections for our cancer patients, Lemar Supermarket, Alsancak offered to host a food collection day outside their Alsancak store to raise much needed food and cleaning products for cancer patients being helped by Tulips/Help Those With Cancer Association.
So on Friday 21 April we set up outside the Alsancak store. Thanks to Lemar the day started very well as they had requested that all their suppliers donate something to the appeal and when we arrived to set up at 10am there was already a big pile of goods waiting for us. Our thanks to Lemar and all the suppliers for their generous donations and allowing us access to their customers.
We had leaflets in both Turkish and English explaining what the food appeal was about, who for and what we were looking for in the way of donations. Sometimes Sue and I get overwhelmed with the sheer generosity and caring of people on this Island. We had four teams of volunteers for the day, and we had Turkish speaking as well as English speaking volunteers. We were amazed at the generosity of the Turkish Cypriots, who probably accounted for 75% of the donations and also the University students were amazingly generous and of course the ex pats who always put their hands in their pockets to help a good cause.
We also received monetary donations on the day, totalling 509.35TL – all in all, a fabulous day!
At the end of the day (6pm) we had a mountain of donations and all those Cancer patients and their families who are struggling on a day to day basis to exist will benefit from the amazing generosity of people on this island.
Our thanks to Fez Kurt, Janice and Duncan Leitch, Karen Selim Mavili and her lovely mum, Carol Wright, Jane Nubley, Alan Jennings, Jennifer Chennell, Barbara Willbye and Seda Avcan for giving up their time to help this worthwhile cause.
