TRNC Tightens Up Immigration Controls

North Cyprus News - Aysegul BaybarsControl of immigration into the TRNC has been stepped up, Minister for the Interior Ayşegül Baybars has said. Between January and October this year, 2,561 people were refused entry into the country because they were considered to be undesirable aliens.

The minister said that there clearly needs to be a policy on the population issue. She added that her ministry had submitted a draft law to the Council of Ministers regarding TRNC citizenship and another draft law on permanent residence.

Baybars said that over the past few years, there had been a number of disturbing developments. “The changing demographic structure, the labour force which comes to the country, the population increase, [and] the change of the socioeconomic structure necessitate some measures, which were not needed in the past”, she said.

Referring to public security systems to be established in the larger towns, Baybars noted that these systems will be introduced into North Nicosia and Kyrenia.
