The number of tourists to visit the TRNC reached 760,000 last year and is expected to increase by 10% this year to 820,000, says Orhan Tolun, Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Tourism and Travel Agencies Union speaking to Turkish Cypriot daily, ‘Halkin Sesi’.
Tolun noted that in 2013, 500,000 tourists came from Turkey, 65,000 from Britain and 30,000 from Germany.
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Postasi’ reported that the Chairman of North Cyprus Hoteliers Association (KITOB), Huseyin Aktig said that a Cyprus settlement will create a boom in tourism.
Commenting that tourism is the destiny of the island, Aktig said that the opening of Ercan and the port of Famagusta to international transportation, as well as, the opening of the fenced off town of Varosha/Maras will dramatically expand tourism. However, he stressed that there is much to be done regarding the tourism sector.
