Interior and Local Government Minister Nazim Cavusoglu says that 28 municipalities are not sustainable and that there are plans to merge the smaller municipalities or to expand the areas of the larger ones. To make any changes will, however, require changes to the Municipalities Act.
Mr Cavusoglu says that making changes are urgent because some municipalities are in dire financial straits and could go bankrupt within three months.
Other changes to the law will also be required based on the experience gained from all the troubles at Nicosia Council.
Mr Cavusoglu says that the current law lays down the responsibilities and duties of municipalities. However it does not contain provisions for fines or punishments if these duties are not discharged.
