The South Cyprus Electricity Authority has warned of power cuts to come, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without power, if customers do not pay their bills. In addition, electricity workers may not receive their monthly salaries as the electricity authority is short of cash because of unpaid bills.
The head of the EAC board of executives said that banking institutions have withdrawn the EAC’s 35 million euro overdraft facilities, with the situation compounded by 30 million euro of unpaid bills from customers.
According to the EAC, 350,000 euro in cheques sent to the organisation have bounced. The head of the EAC appealed to all its clients to settle their bills.
The EAC warned that if bills remain unpaid, they would have no choice but to resume power cuts in the near future.
