The third lane on the north side of the Metehan checkpoint was opened to traffic on Monday.
Transport Minister Tolga Atakan, Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay and Chief of Police Süleyman Manavoğlu attended the opening ceremony.
The third lane was added to ease the tailbacks of cars crossing over to the north. Since the Turkish lira began plummeting, Greek Cypriots have been flooding across the border drawn by the cheaper cost of fuel, cigarettes and medicine. This has increased waiting times at the border to 30 minutes per vehicle. Transport Minister Tolga Atakan said they would take action to ease traffic congestion on the north side of the border.
He added that the third lane was a temporary solution and that the whole of the border crossing was scheduled for improvement.
