Predictions that President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades will meet in March, are mounting.
The statement that President Mustafa Akıncı is in talks with Anastasiades after failing negotiations was widely publicised in the Greek Cypriot press.
President Akıncı expressed his desire to meet up with the Greek Cypriot leader to find out what are his real intentions
Akıncı made a comment to the press one day before his meeting with Assistant Secretary-General for UN Peacekeeping Operations, Jean Pierre Lacroix.
Pointing out that he should have a friendly face-to-face meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader, President Akıncı emphasised that he wants to know what Anastasiades what he really thinks about the future and that this is his historical responsibility.
The Greek Cypriot press, which assessed the President’s statements, said the two leaders’ talks would be finalised within 24 hours. The press also wrote that the two leaders would meet within 10 days.
Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot government spokesman Prodromos Prodromu commented on President Akıncı’s statements, saying that the Greek Cypriot leader was ready to meet and forwarded that message to UNSG’s Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar.
