South Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides met with the UK Minister for Europe David Lidington at the Foreign Office in London on Thursday afternoon.
The Foreign Minister said that they had held an “interesting” discussion, which covered bilateral relations on issues such as the cooperation of security services on the issue of counter-terrorism, including the role of the British bases on the island in the same context.
“We mainly discussed the Cyprus issue, under which conditions the talks could resume, our standard position on the matter,” added Kasoulides.
Following a recently signed military agreement between Russia and South Cyprus last month, a British Foreign Office official told CNA that Britain was concerned about this move.
“Our basic position is that this is a matter for Cyprus. It is however set in the context of our current concern regarding Russia’s policy over Ukraine,” the unnamed official told CNA.
“We acknowledge the unity which Cyprus has demonstrated with the EU on this,” said the official.
“In light of the current problems it is not the time to extend a hand of friendship to Russia, until it shows willingness to fulfil the Minsk agreement,” he added.
