The popular series of more than 200 travel books ‘The Rough Guide’ has released it’s 2013 ‘Hot List’ for places to see during the coming year.
More and more travellers are discovering Turkish-controlled north Cyprus’s wealth of ancient sites, trekking trails and pristine beaches, now within an easy day-trip from the south. Highlights include Kyrenia harbour, the fairytale Crusader castle of Buffavento and Bellapais village, once home to writer Lawrence Durrell.

Tourism Minister, Unal Ustel, said that all the hard work and marketing done in London and other North European Markets was beginning to pay off.
While the Minister will no doubt be pleased at the Rough Guide’s endorsement of the TRNC, the guide was slated by UK locals for including Margate at #7.
“Margate is run down. Half of the shops are closed or in the process of closing down, there are yobs on every corner and amusement arcades all over the place. It is not the kind of place you really want to live in, let alone go on holiday to.”
The full top 10 are:
- North Cyprus
- Kosice (Slovakia)
- Dresden (Germany)
- Northeast Iceland
- Margate, England
- Valparaiso, Chile
- Puerto Rico
