A Red Falcon (Buteo Rufinus) which is regarded as very rare was found in the fields outside the village of Cayirova on the Karpas Penninsula.
It was found by retired school teacher Akin Ucar who had gone out hunting. He noticed a large bird in the fields, attempting to fly. However the falcon could only manage to get briefly airborne before falling back. Mr Ucar approached the bird and noticed that it was wounded in its right wing. It had obviously been shot by hunters.
Mr Ucar took the bird to the Famagusta Vetinary Office where it is now recovering.
The Red Falcon has a wing span of one metre and lives by hunting snakes and rodents.
