Invitations for tender to privatise Kyrenia old harbour will be made soon, Tourism and Environment Minister Fikri Ataoğlu has said. His announcement followed questions put by member of the UBP İzlem Altuğra who pointed to the pollution in the harbour, which has been known about for years. The old harbour is visited by thousands of locals and tourists and its current condition reflects poorly on the country, she said. She asked what the solution was and suggested scrapping the complex administrative authority that managed the area.
Minister Ataoğlu said that a number of studies had been made and the best way would be to privatise the old harbour using the build-operate-transfer model.
Invitations for tenders would be made soon, he said. However, this did not include the adjacent marina, he noted.
Ataoğlu also said that the fact that the restaurants were right on the quayside was part of the problem. Studies had been undertaken to solve this issue, the minister said.
