RoC LABOUR Minister Sotiroura Charalambous, has voiced strong opposition to a bill introducing criteria which would exclude Turkish Cypriots and third country nationals from free access to state hospitals.
Charalambous said the bill has been tabled into parliament out of petty party considerations and populism and called for a high level political discussion. She said politicians and the government must consider the issue and make a decision after taking into account all political and economic factors.
The bill states that only those who have either submitted a tax statement or contributed to the social insurance fund for three years will have the right to free medical and drug care in government hospitals. They say the measure will save up to 30 million euros a year.
