The first phase of planting saplings began today under a protocol signed by North Nicosia Municipality (LTB), the Turkish Cypriot Construction Contractors’ Association and Boray Developments.
The programme is to plant 1,000 saplings across three different areas under the authority of the LTB.
This morning, the first of 350 saplings were planted opposite the Ortaköy Pump Station. Students of Levent College, employees of LTB Parks, Gardens department, as well as the Construction Contractors’ Association and Boray Development employees all lent a hand in order that Nicosia could have a greener environment.
The remaining seedlings will be planted in the next few days.
During the planting, LTB President Mehmet Harmancı, Construction Contractors’ Union President Cafer Gurcafer and Boray Developments Director Aykut Mazhar spoke to the press.
Cafer Gurcafar, President of the Turkish Cypriot Construction Contractors’ Association, said that they have come together for a good cause and stated that they have seen how they can contribute to the greening of an old city.
Gurcafar stated that the concept that the “polluter pays” is generally a prevailing practice in the world and in some countries, it is a legal obligation. This means that it has put a great responsibility on construction contractors especially because his profession can not return the land to its former state, he said.
