The Animal Protection Society has condemned the large scale killing of dogs.
The Society says that over the past few days, large numbers of dogs have been killed by shooting or poisoning in the Kyrenia, Nicosia and Guzelyurt areas.
The Society has protested against these actions and has called on the Animal Welfare Act to be written into law urgently. The head of the Society, Tomris Guven, said in his press statement that the police who are carrying out these killings should be arrested and punished.
He continued that dogs are domesticated animals, no longer living in the wild. They need people’s interest and love. It is some owners who abandon them to live in poor conditions in the streets who are at fault.
The new Animal Welfare Act has been signed by the President and needs to be approved by parliament one last time.
