Leader of the People’s Party (HP) Kudret Ozersay, has urged President Mustafa Akinci to take initiatives over the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) declared by the Greek Cypriots.
Recently Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has pointedly laid claim to bloc six in maritime waters which overlap Turkey’s continental shelf and the TRNC’s maritime zone.
President Akinci should make representations to the UN Secretary-General and to meet with the ambassadors of the permanent member countries belonging to the UN Security Council, he said.
Ozersay pointed out that it was not a coincidence that Anastasiades had underlined hydrocarbon explorations in bloc six ahead of the approaching presidential elections in the South.
Akinci must do something to get agreement with all parties regarding maritime zones in order to defuse tensions and pave the way for further Cyprus negotiations. These negotiations could be to establish partnership or cooperation between two existing political authorities, he said.
