This hard hitting statement came from the President of the Chamber of Tradesmen and Artisans, Hurrem Tulga.
The worsening economic conditions are putting many debtors into court. Mr Tulga claims that in the last month alone some 1000 people have had judgements awarded against them that could have them sent to prison. He says that there will be another 10,000 to follow in their footsteps.
Mr Tulga states that his association is contacted daily by failing businesses and debtors but that the government are doing nothing about the situation. He says that 7 businesses go bankrupt every day and that debtors are now hiding from the police or crossing over to South Cyprus to escape.
Tulga says that the only jobs available are for minimum wage waiters and cleaners. In the private sector workers have fewer rights because there are no unions to support them.
