Irfan Celik, head of the olive oil producers’ association, ZEYBIR, said that the TRNC produces around two thousand tons of olive oil every year, none of which is exported.
Mr Celik said that there were over one million olive trees in the TRNC producing two thousand tons of oil annually. However this oil did not meet EU standards and therefore cannot be exported.
The main problem is that the olive mills are not modern enough to produce low acid olive oil but changes are being made and now there are plans to export to the UK and USA early this year.
Mr Celik feels that these exports could contribute some TL 20 million to the economy.
