South Cyprus Government spokesperson Nikos Christodoulides has reaffirmed Cyprus’ position that any solution of the Cyprus problem cannot contain derogations from the EU acquis,
Christodoulides, speaking to Sunday’s ‘Simerini’ added that the EU also held this view, and that everyone involved in the negotiations needs to serve the interest of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and no one else.
It is important, he said, that we all realise that there can be reconciliation along the lines of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that incorporates the European acquis.
“Not settling the Cyprus problem does not mean that the Republic of Cyprus will be unrecognised and that the so-called ‘TRNC’ will be. The result will be consolidation of the status quo and the increased dependence of the Turkish Cypriots on Turkey,” Christodoulides said.
