The main boost to tourism in the TRNC would be to establish a new airline company to service North Cyprus or to establish a national carrier, Minister of Tourism Fikri Ataoğlu has said.
“Discussions are under way between the government and three airline companies including Turkish Airlines, to create a new national carrier and slash air fares to and from Ercan airport”, he said.
Airline chiefs will visit the TRNC very soon to discuss tariffs, taxes and increasing flights to North Cyprus, said Ataoğlu. He also stated that they were trying to cut the high cost of airline tickets
Following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent visit to the TRNC, Turkish Airlines has increased the number of flights to North Cyprus from seven to eight per day, after President Akinci informed Erdogan of the problems faced by the TRNC tourist industry.
Ataoğlu said that Ercan Airport is also negotiating with the relevant company officials to finish the new runway as soon as possible.
“However, this is not possible with the current rate of progress. Even if the whole airport is not finished the following year, we will have a chance to bring over large-sized aircraft with the completion of the runway.”
As regards promoting tourism, Minister Ataoğlu said that they emphasised promotion activities but there were difficulties in bringing in tourists from abroad because of the high cost of airline tickets and the lack of direct flights.
Recently the boss of AtlasGlobal Airlines Murat Ersoy, blamed the high price of airline tickets on the seriously devalued Turkish Lira and the increase in fuel costs.
