Prime Minister Tufan Erhürman together with a number of ministers carried out inspections at the Derinya border crossing.
The Premier was accompanied by the Commander of the Security Forces Major General Tevfik Algan, the Minister for Public Works and Communications Tolga Atakan, Minister for Interior Ayşegül Baybars, Minister for Labour and Social Security Zeki Çeler, Minister for Agriculture and Natural Resources Erkut Şahali and a large group of officials.
Making a statement after the inspection was completed, the Prime Minister said that the Derinya border crossing will be ready for opening on Monday.
Explaining that as soon as they came to government, they had worked extensively to open the Derinya and Aplıç border crossing. However, due to the devaluation of the Turkish Lira against foreign currency rates, there had been major problems for the tenders.
Despite this fact, Erhürman said that as soon as the Greek Cypriot administration is prepared to open their side of the border crossings, if needs be, temporary measures will be put in place so that the crossing points can open.
“Both the Derinya and Aplıç border crossing gates are ready to be opened on Monday”, said Erhürman.
Referring to the numerous amount of people crossing from South Cyprus to the North, Erhürman said that 20 new vacancies have been created for more personnel to help lighten the work load at the border crossings.
He also said that the opening date of the border crossings would be determined by the political decisions made by the two Cypriot community leaders.
