The massive Alakopru Dam in Mersin which will be the catchment dam for the water to be collected in Turkey and piped to Gecitkoy, North Cyprus is now complete, exactly on schedule.
The foundations for the dam were laid in March 2011 and the final concrete coating for its surface was finished last week. The dam will go into operation in September and will be able to hold 130 million cubic metres of water.
In addition to providing water for the TRNC, the dam will generate 26 megawatts of electricity.
The counterpart dam at Gecitkoy in North Cyprus is also going according to plan and completion is expected to be during September.
The pipeline will provide North Cyprus with 75 million cubic meters of water per year .
