A man was attacked in Greek Nicosia for waving a Turkish flag. The man aged between 30 and 35 was saved from a lynching attempt by an angry mob of Greek Cypriots by the police.
The crowd grabbed the flag and set fire to it. Meanwhile the man, who was carrying a French passport was detained by the police.
Otherwise, apart from this piece of provocation, there have been no reports of public disorder. Early today, there was little sign of panic in the capital and only a few depositors, mainly pensioners were waiting for the banks to open at noon.
Some Cypriots said they would wait until the weekend to go to the bank, not wanting to participate in a bank run that might collapse the very banks that the Greek Cypriot government is trying to protect.
