The economic downturn in the TRNC has created an exodus of around 70 thousand mainland Turks. Although precise records are not kept, an estimated 68 thousand people from South Turkey have remained in the TRNC.
For many years, immigrants from southern Turkey flocked to the TRNC to take advantage of the higher living standards and employment opportunities; working in the construction industry or as waiters etc.
However, with the worsening economy and food prices being higher than in Turkey, many have gone back.
It should be noted that these estimates exclude Turks from other regions and those that entered illegally.
