The demand for foreign holidays by TRNC citizens for the New Year holiday is low compared to last year, President of Cyprus Turkish Tourist and Travel Agencies Association (KITSAB) Erkan Kilim has said. He attributed the fall in demand for air tickets to the increase in prices.

He noted that more people travelled abroad during the New Year holidays in the past year, “Increasing foreign exchange and airline ticket prices this year have affected the tourism agencies negatively.” Kilim called on the airline companies to drop their ticket prices to encourage more people to travel abroad for holidays.

Having noted that most European countries are preferred the destinations for holidays, Kilim has warned those who travel abroad and those who want to participate in tours arranged at home or abroad, should purchase from KITSAB member agencies and also to make sure that they have travel insurance.

Kilim complained that the early general election to be held in 2018, had a negative impact on the tourism industry and noted that frequent changes in governments and ministers, have resulted in adverse effects on travel agencies and the tourism sector and that long-term plans are needed for the development of the tourism sector.

He also added that the ruling by South Cyprus which does not permit tourists coming to the TRNC to cross the border if they stay that they are staying at hotels formerly owned by Greek Cypriots, was “inhumane”. The association wanted to make representations to President Akıncı about this issue, said Kilim.
