Work on asphalting the road to the Derynia border crossing is completed, leaving some infrastructure work to be done. Employees need to be hired and a small kiosk installed for the border police before the crossing is ready for opening.
According to Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Havadis’, the authorities want to open the Derynia and Aplic border crossing points at the same time “in order to encourage the Greek Cypriot side” to cross. However, Famagusta residents argue that for the opening of the Derynia crossing only five months of works were needed, while opening the Aplic crossing will take eight months. Therefore they want the Derynia crossing to open as soon as possible within the tourist period.
