Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu has repeated his criticism of the Greek Cypriot unilateral exploration for gas offshore Cyprus adding, “This process cannot continue in this way for ever.”
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was meeting with Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Official Residence.
Çavuşoğlu pointed to the unilateral hydrocarbons activities of the Greek Cypriot side in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“It is not right for the Greek Cypriot administration to unilaterally take a step in the region,” he said, “because the Turkish Cypriot people have a right to the reserves around the island of Cyprus”.
“Now there will be other processes in Cyprus. This process cannot carry on this way for life”, he said.
Çavuşoğlu noted that “EU countries should not take shelter behind the Cyprus problem any more,” said.
“After the referendum in 2004, the EU did not keep its word. Now, embargoes and restrictions on the TRNC should be lifted as soon as possible. This is inhumane. In this day and age you have been granted [EU] membership which you do not deserve, you keep the other side under pressure. You are applying inhuman sanctions.
“This is not right, but in the upcoming period we would like to maintain our relations with the EU not only in Cyprus but also in other issues. Here we also expect sincerity from the EU”, the Turkish Foreign Minister said.
