Kyrenia Struggling With Unplanned Population Growth

Kyrenia cannot cope with the current population numbers, its mayor Nidai Gungordu has said.

Unplanned population growth is creating problems with its infrasturucture such as traffic density and demands on its sewage plant.

The mayor noted that the municipality has employees and a budget to serve 33,200 people, however, the current number of inhabitants is around 130,000. He compared the situation to “a lightweight boxer competing in a heavyweight boxing championship”.

Mayor Gungordu added that the last census was held in 2011, meaning that the census result of 33,200 people was completely out of date.
