Main roads to Kyrenia were flooded by the torrential downpour yesterday. Poor drainage systems, unable to cope with the deluge, forced motorists on the Baris Park roundabout to enter and exit the wrong way to avoid driving through water deep enough to stall engines. Indeed numerous cars had stalled and were left stranded at the roadside, the drivers waiting for assistance.
On the main road between Kyrenia and Nicosia landslides of rocks and mud closed the road completely.
Recent heavy rainfall on the mountains lead to runoff that can make roads impassable without jeeps or vehicles with high ground clearance. Drivers are advised to only make journeys that are essential during extreme downpours as flash floods are not uncommon.
