The UBP convention concluded Sunday with voting for the Prime Ministers post. Irsen Kucuk was re-elected in a closely fought contest with 704 votes against 690 votes for his nearest rival Ahmet Kasif. Mr Kasif was the President’s Dervis Eroglu, preferred candidate.
A number of legal challenges to the voting have been threatened by Mr Kasif and his supporters, but it is felt that these are unlikely to succeed even if they are pursued.
Residents and supporters will be interested to see how a divided UBP rule the country, especially given the uneasy relationship between the Prime Minister and President.
The TRNC General Elections will be held in 2014.
