Since 1974, 17,000 mixed marriages have taken place in North Cyprus and 35,000 children born from these marriages, General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teacher’s trade union (KTOS) has said.
Pointing out that only 10,000 children out of the 35,000 had been granted citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus, the rest of the children are victims, Elcil said. He further added that KTOS had decide to take legal action on the issue, describing it as a communal problem and a “violation of human rights”.
“KTOS will start accepting applications from the families which are affected by this situation and afterwards ,it will launch a legal process, and a protest to the South”, Elcil stated.
Arguing that the political parties in the TRNC are not interested in this issue, Elcil called on them to take steps to find a solution to the problem.
