The Middle East Air Traffic Controllers and PilotsTournament (MECAP) founded in Bahrain in 2010, is being held in the TRNC this year, in the face of Greek Cypriot objections.
The teams came to the island despite the fact that they were exposed to various obstacles by the Southern Cyprus authorities.
The organisation, CTATCA (Turkish Cypriot Air Traffic Controllers Association), Çatalköy Municipality and Düzkaya Sports Club are also supporting the tournament in the TRNC both politically and internationally, as well as in terms of promoting the country.
Air traffic controllers in Europe have been playing football together since the 1960s under the auspices of the European Cup of Controllers (ECC). The profession regards this as their greatest opportunity to meet socially and continues this tradition every year in a different country.
Pilots also meet in Europe to compete against each other and socialise in smaller organisations.
The organisation, which first launched in Bahrain in 2010, includes air traffic controllers from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Dubai and Muscat; Gulf Air and DHL.
It was important to organise such an event in different countries in 2010, both in terms of politics and international relations, as well as in promoting the country.
The teams to joining MECAP are as follows:
Emirates ACC, Oman Air, Kuwait ACC, Saudia ACC, Air Arabia ACC, Gulf Air, Bahrain ACC, Anatolian Eagles, Iran ATC, Riyad ATC, Turkey ATC and CTATCA
The match is being be held today at the Düzkaya Nihat Bağcier Stadium.
