Despite the embargo on purchasing fuel in the TRNC, there have been long tail-backs at the Metehan border crossing while Greek Cypriots queue for hours to enter the north.
It has been noted that a significant number of the vehicles in the queue have south Cyprus number plates.
A recent notification circulated by the south Cyprus Customs Department said that there would be checks at border crossings to discover if Greek Cypriot registered vehicles have been filled with fuel from North Cyprus.
Some motorists told TAK news agency that they had never seen such long queues heading north.
The weak lira and cheaper cost of fuel in North Cyprus has been a magnet for Greek Cypriot motorists who have flocked to fill up in the north.
