A helicopter piloted by a French pilot crashed into the foothills of Lapta, earlier today.
The helicopter pilot was a contractor who had been hired to spray the forests with insecticide. However, the pilot, unfamiliar with the terrain, accidentally hit an overhead power cable causing the helicopter to burst into flames. Miraculously, the pilot showed presence of mind and was able to jump out of the helicopter which was very low to the ground, saving his life. No other passengers are reported to have been on board at the time.
Sources say that the man broke his leg but otherwise survived the incident without serious injury. Local residents were without power for most of the day while engineers worked to repair the damage to overhead cables. The electricity supply was eventually restored at 8:50pm.
