A Greek Cypriot has been appointed deputy governor to the Central Bank in the south; a position which has been vacant for the past 50 years.
The post, traditionally reserved for a Turkish Cypriot, was given to Spyros Stavrinakis by President Christofias, just 13 days before presidential elections take place in the south. President Christofias will not be running for re-election.
Christofias denied that this move was politically motivated and said that it was necessitated by Central Bank’s growing commitments.
