Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu responded to the press briefing given by Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu.
He said that the wording used by the foreign minister while criticizing President Mustafa Akıncı’s statements were tactless*.
“Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has made a habit of making such statements and such statements are unacceptable. For a person who is occupying the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Foreign Ministry and continually using such wording while making statements is wrong and also acting in contrary to Turkish Cypriots interests”, said Burcu in his statement.
He said that the foreign minister not being able to understand this is also a misfortune.
“Our President Mustafa Akıncı will continue to voice concern where he sees fit”, said Burcu in his statement.
*President Akinci had made comments condemning the introduction of a tax on goods brought across the Green Line intended for aid for Greek Cypriots and Maronites who live in the north by the UN. He also criticised Ertugruloglu’s assertion that Turkey could fire on foreign vessels drillling offshore Cyprus on behalf of the Greek Cypriots. All this was akin to shooting oneself in the foot, said Akinci.
