Finance Minister, Ersin Tatar, appeared on TV yesterday to counter recent accusations that North Cyprus has a bloated State sector.
He pointed out that looking at the last three years, the number of people taken on was 1401 but those leaving totalled 1440. He did however admit that these numbers did not include the 340 CTA employees that were taken on to the state payroll when the airline went bankrupt last year. There were no disclosures on the actual numbers of state employees.
There was also no discussion of the 102 ‘consultants’ that are paid high salaries to provide expert advice to the government, whose salaries are estimated to cost TL 11 million annually. There is some criticism that this group of consultants include political appointments with no visible effect on improving the workings of government.
