Trade department figures show that exports of hellim from the TRNC to Turkey in 2016 were approximately equivalent to 13 million US dollars, while during the first ten months of 2017 exports of the cheese increased to 16 million dollars. The main reason for this increase was the suspension of hellim production in Turkey because of laws related to halloumi/hellim registration.
However, the general exports of hellim to other third countries have fallen. According to data issued by the trade department, hellim exports in 2016 were equivalent to 29 million dollars, while in the first ten months of 2017 the sum decreased to 26 million dollars.
The directors of the dairy products company Gulgun, Yunus and Mustafa Betmezoglu, said that foreign currency is one of the most important factors which influences exports.
