The EU has granted over 700,000 euros, funded by the Community Development 4th Grant Programme, to centralise the collection of waste by Lapta, Alsancak, Kyrenia and Çatalköy municipalities, which will then be transported to the Güngör landfill site.
Kyrenia Municipality tendered for the project in April and will oversee the scheme alongside the Chamber of Artisans and Craftsmen and the Cyprus Turkish Hoteliers Association.
In 2013, the Council of Ministers allocated a seven-dönüm designated “green area” in lower Karaman for the project . Now that EU funding has been granted, the project should be completed within three years.
Speaking at an event at the Olive Tree Hotel in Çatalköy promoting the project, Kyrenia Mayor Nidai Güngördü said that the project was intended to improve the quality of the northern coastline. He noted that it was a shame that similar projects did not exist across the country and that there should be more recycling of solid refuse.
