TRNC President Derviş Eroğlu announced today that he will be running for the presidency as an “independent” candidate during the April 2015 presidential elections, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.
When making the announcement he said that he had carried out his duties with honour and pride with the support of the public.
Eroğlu, who referred to the public as ‘my brothers’ in his address, said he was aware of the needs of the people. He drew attention to the fact that his presidency had “kept the promises” they had made in their previous election campaign such as opening the Presidential Palace to the public; leading on the negotiation process from where they had left off as well as forming the Public Council and Parliamentary Platform.
Touching on the negotiation process, Eroğlu mentioned the hope that the Greek Cypriot Side wants to solve the Cyprus issue as much as the Turkish Cypriots and noted that he was fully aware of the public trust and faith in him. He pointed to the joint declaration he signed with Greek Cypriot President Anastasiades.
Towards the end of his address, Eroğlu thanked everyone who supported him previously and now and pointed that they would use social media to keep abreast of public opinion and make the public aware of their views as well. He added that he “had not chosen the easy option or shied away from responsibility “and had entered the race sure of victory; all the signs indicated that he would be re-elected, he said.
Eroğlu wished everyone who is a candidate well and the best of luck in the elections.
