President Mustafa Akinci met with the UNSG’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide on Monday.
The meeting which lasted for over an hour was also attended by newly-appointed negotiator Ozdil Nami and the UNSG’s Special Representative Lisa Buttenheim.
Eide confirmed that the talks would resume in a constructive manner and could lead to substantive negotiations. He also stressed that his would be a supportive role.
After his first meeting with Eide, Akinci said that “Mr Eide will be very helpful”, but he pointed that it was up to both sides to solve the problem themselves.
He also invited Greek Cypriot President Anastasiades to match his own “determination and political will”.
“I hope that Mr Anastasiades will share the same vision: that we need a solution, and that we should have found a solution long ago,” he said.
President Akinci will meet with Eide again after the president’s first official visit abroad when he meets with Turkish President Erdogan in Ankara this week.
Eide will meet with President Anastasiades today.
