UN special advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide will have a dinner meeting with the two Cypriot leaders on Thursday evening. Eide is tasked with the job of keeping the climate positive and re-igniting the stalled Cyprus negotiations.
After the talks broke down at Mont Pèlerin, Switzerland, Eide met both leaders, saying that “this was obviously as setback”.
Since it is said that President Akinci will be travelling to Brussels on Monday, it could be that Eide will introduce some ideas on how to restart the negotiations before he flies to Athens on Friday and Ankara on Monday.
The Cyprus Summit in Switzerland ground to a halt after there was no agreement reached on territory and following the interventions of Greece and Turkey, which damaged the positive atmosphere of the talks.
