The first stage of a new road project was started today with an opening ceremony to lay down foundations.
Various dignitaries attended, including the Turkish Ambassador to Cyprus, Ibrahim Akca, the Interior Minister and the Transportation Minister.
The first stage will be a road leading out of Dipkarpaz and will extend 3.5 km and should be finished within four months. The overall project will be a road of 125 km long and will take some 2.5 years to complete. It is estimated that the overall cost will be TL2.5 million and is being funded by Turkey.
At the ceremony, the Turkish Ambassador said that as soon as the first stage was complete, it would be followed by further stages which would eventually lead all the way to the tip of the island, Zafer Burunu.
It is hoped that this new road project will open up the potential of the area, particularly for tourists who often head up to the remote part of the island for it’s natural beauty and golden sandy beaches.
