Drama occurred in front of the Nicosia Council Offices this morning as an employee attempted to break through the striking council workers’ barricades to get into work. However he was physically blocked and verbally abused by the strikers. Police were called in to calm down the situation and had to escort the lone employee away.
The strikers then lit fires in front of the municipality but these were quickly extinguished by the fire service.
Nicosia council workers have been on strike for months in protest of delayed salary payments and unpaid pension and national health contributions. The latest peace offering by the council was rejected by BES members, who want to hold out for all their demands which includes a 13th month payment and a guarantee of no redundancies.
