Children of Cypriot Mixed Marriages Face Political Barrier

Sener Elcil, general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTOS), continues to press for a resolution for children born from Cypriot mixed marriages who have difficulties obtaining Republic of Cyprus citizenship.

He said: “We are determined to take the necessary steps in order to solve this problem. We have invited all citizens affected to join in the struggle”.

In a written statement, Elcil argued that since 1974, in the TRNC, there have been approximately 17 thousand mixed marriages and the children of those marriages had been unable to obtain citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus because of political reasons.
